DIY Coat Hanger!

Namaste Y'all,

We are in the process of moving into our first apartment together and we are so excited! We decided to personalize our place by DIYing some pieces. The first one we have been working on is a Coat hanger and we thought we would share with you all how we did it. It was the perfect way to start our woodwork because to be honest, we don't the first thing about carpentry or DIY'ing furniture. We basically asked the awesome guys at Home Depot and handy dandy Google.

We essentially started with a loose plank of wood we had lying around in our backyard from our fence. We really liked the color of the wood and the size of it as well. It was initially a 6.5ft long piece of wood and we didn't want to mount that entire thing on our wall so we took it to Home Depot to cut. The guys there were so sweet enough to cut it down to 4ft for free as well as direct us to areas where we needed to find our other things.

After cutting our plank down to size, we went ahead and sanded it. We got a pretty thin sandpaper set so we wouldn't sand away the preexisting color on it that we love so much. We sanded just enough to remove all fly away wood pieces and any splintering wood on the top and especially the sides where we got it cut.

Next we sealed the wood so it would seal the pores of the wood and for longer protection against wear. we painted on two coats of the sealer with a wait period of an hour between coats.

Next we went ahead and measured out the spaces where we wanted the knobs to be placed and exactly how many knobs we wanted on it. We got all our knobs from Anthropologie thanks to Ess :).

We drilled holes into the markings for our 7 knobs with a drill bit that was a tiny bit smaller than the knob bolts. The trick is to use a drill bit that makes a big enough hole that you can screw in the bolt with enough pressure but small enough that it doesn't just slip through all the way.

We added 2 sawtooth picture hangers, one on each end of the coat hangers so we can hang it up on a command hook, nails in the wall or even thumb tacks that are strong enough. And we're done!

We are so proud of it and hope you like it as much as we do. We haven't moved into our new apartment yet so it hasn't found it's permanent home yet. We'll update you to its final home :)
We have more DIY/apartment decor posts coming up so stay tuned!

Leave us a comment below if you have any requests!! :)
