DIY Pallet Mug Hanger

Namaste Y'all!

We are just moving into our new place! Slowly but surely everything is coming together and we are so excited to show you all how it turns out. Today we are going to share a DIY pallet mug hanger we worked on for our new apartment.

We were very inspired by some projects we saw on Pinterest and this pallet idea really stuck. So our first course of action was acquiring said pallet. Both Cee and I are quite thrifty and weren't keen on purchasing a pallet so we had our eyes peeled for one everywhere we went. We finally found one randomly while getting my car fixed. The sweet mechanic even loaded it into my car.

The pallet we got was a lot bigger than we wanted so we cut it down to size with the help of a family friend's saw. We wanted 4 rows to put our mugs on and a plank on top to write on. We weren't too keen on putting a really heavy object on our apartment walls considering they are quite thin. So we got sawed off whatever extra wood we could on the back and bottom.

Next course of action was to sand, sand and sand some more! Since we found this particular beauty on the side of the road, it was a little dinged up. We wanted to get all the splinters out and sand down any rough edges.

Next we went ahead and stained it with a stain we had lying around in our garage since the wood was incredibly raw. (Our garages are just jungles of random things that we didn't know we owned until we stumble across them). After staining it, we sealed the wood to protect the stain on it and make it last for a longer time.

The next steps are trickier and our amateur carpenter skills needed help from the handy dandy boys in Home Depot. We truly recommend hitting up your local Home Depot if you need any help with your DIY wood projects. They helped us pick out the right sized hangers in the back and the right type of nails we needed in the wall enough to hold up a heavy object without ripping through the drywall of our apartment.  The ones we got seem to be good for any of the pallet projects but if your pallet is considerably smaller or bigger (especially bigger), you might want to get other hangers.

We got some standard hooks that we had to drill into place as the mug holders. We used a drill bit and electric drill to drill the nails in place because they are impossible to screw in. We had a hard time doing this part and ended up asking my dad for some help.

The last step was to paint in the words we wanted on the top. We debated a bit with the classic COFFEE or DRINKS or even DRANKS (cause we like to live in ratchet city). We decided to pick DRINKS because we use our mugs for coffee, tea, water, juices, wine and any other beverages. It just seems right to not limit our uses for the mugs :)

That's it! The Pallet Mug Hanger is complete and ready for installation. We are incredibly proud of our product and had a blast making it. We hope you can try it out and find it just as easy to make!

We are still getting moved into the new apartment and havent put up the pallet yet so we will update this post with photos or do a little apartment tour post so watch out for that! Stay tuned for some more college related posts and let us know if there's anything you would like us to cover :)

Signing off,
Cee and Ess
